Following the death of civil rights organizer Sam Boynton, approximately 300 people gathered at the church for a memorial service and meeting organized with the help of Amelia Boynton, Rev. Bernard Lafayette, and Rev. Louis Lloyd Anderson. Long before the movement gained national attention, Tabernacle members had quietly supported voter registration efforts, including secret training sessions held in the church basement.
